The pilot boat
The pilot boat is positioned at the pilot station at sea. Pilots destined for incoming vessels are transported to them by yawl or tender. Similarly, disembarking pilots from vessels is achieved by the same means and brought back to the pilot boat. |
Yawls/launch These boats hang on the sides of the pilot boat. They are lowered to the water by a davit and transfer the pilot to and from the ship.
Jet-driven tenders These are used for the same purposes as the yawls. However, they are faster and larger.
Conventional tender Again this is used for the same purposes as the yawls and jet-driven tenders. They are, however, only used as a backup.
Helicopter The helicopter is used when the pilot services are suspended due to adverse weather conditions. In this case, the transferring of pilots to and from a ship using yawls etc. would be impossible.
